Urban Impaired Stream Regulations - Coming Soon! To a City or Town Near You: the Urban Impaired Stream – How to Navigate these Troubled Waters

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has designated nearly three dozen waterways in Maine’s largest urban areas as “urban impaired streams” due to their failure to meet water quality standards because of effects of stormwater runoff from nearby developed land. As a result, commercial landowners throughout Maine in the affected watershed areas have now become subject to stringent environmental permit requirements for additional stormwater treatment controls.  This presentation will be used to help guide commercial landowners who want to understand and control the potential impact of Urban Impaired Stream Regulations. Our presenters will provide an overview of the first-in-the-nation Long Creek Stormwater Management District, defining what regulations apply, and explaining a “group permit” process where dozens of participating landowners in four municipalities joined together to respond collectively to the new MDEP permit requirements.

Additionally, attendees will learn about the impacts on individual landowners, the lessons learned from the Long Creek Watershed Management process, and future predictions for the next urban impaired stream, including what worked, what didn’t, and what might be done differently next time.
