With approximately 1.7 million sq ft of retail, and over 250,000 sq ft of office space, the Portland suburb of Windham has grown to be the commercial center of Maine’s Sebago Lakes Region. Windham’s suburban setting, distance to the existing sewer system and accommodating sandy soils have all contributed to allowing this development to occur on private septic systems. If Windham is to realize its goals of Downtown revitalization and increased residential density a public wastewater system needs to become a reality. A recent public-private partnership has been formed to advance the prospects of a public wastewater system to serve Windham’s downtown.
The Town of Windham, and Jamar, a Sebago Lakes Region commercial developer have entered into an agreement which will ultimately lead to the first public wastewater system in Windham’s commercial district. This system is being designed to accommodate wastewater from Jamar’s Plaza development along with new, and existing commercial development in the surrounding area. Other current development opportunities include the Windham Economic Development Corporation’s eight acre Anglers Road Commons and up to 9,000 sq ft of retail/restaurant development adjacent to the Microtel Hotel, which has recently seen its own expansion of rooms along with an event center.
Just outside of Windham’s downtown is the Quarry Ridge Business Park with close to 1000 acres ready to accommodate any size office, cultivation or manufacturing facility with easy access to US Route 302 and within 15 minutes of the Maine Turnpike, US Route 95.
Windham is a growing community of 18,000 residents, serving a market area of 65,000. Windham offers affordable housing, an excellent school system and year round community events while having beautiful lakes and mountains right in our back yard. It’s no wonder that Windham is one of the fastest growing communities in Maine. As we like to say in Windham, you can Find It Here!
